Radiosurgery
is done at the Illinois Neurological Institute using two distinct
technologies, Gamma Knife and CyberKnife. Initial
evaluations are done in the Gamma Knife Clinic. CyberKnife treatments
are done at the Community Cancer Center, The CyberKnife is a
small linear accelerator mounted on a Kuka industrial robot that
delivers with very high accuracy a high dose of radiation to
a carefully defined target in a single dose or in several fractionated
doses. The target is designed with the use of thin CT films and
at times merged MR images. The treatment can be delivered with
great accuracy because the position of the patient is repeatedly
monitored using x-rays that are compared with the planning CT
images and then the computer program alters the Robot position
to compensate for small patient movements.
